Replacing Scissor Hinge Mechanisms

Dell B2 type scissor hinge mechanisms come in 4 sizes: small, standard size, large and very large mechanisms (click to compare).

Each sized scissor hinge mechanism is made of main scissor (3 parts together) and a scissor "foot" (see image at right).

The different sized mechanisms are replaced using the same method which is illustrated here using the standard size.

The scissor "foot" gets placed first by slipping it easily under 4 metal "foot holds" in the keyboard base (see images at right).

The main scissor has 2 pairs of "nobs" (highlighted with green and orange arrows) that get pushed into 2 corresponding pairs of "nob hold" positions in the scissor "foot" (also highlighted with green and orange arrows at far right).

The green highlighted "nobs" slide into their "holds" first. This is done by moving the main scissor in the direction of the green arrows with the "nobs" pressed down to drag them along the keyboard base.

Now, one at a time, press down firmly on the orange highlighted "nobs" until they click completely inside their "hold" positions in the "foot." You are done!

Removing Scissor Hinge Mechanisms

Removing B2 scissors of all sizes (click here to compare different sizes) is the same for all sizes and pretty much the reverse of replacing them (reading Replacing Scissor Hinge Mechanisms above can be useful). Method:

pull up on scissor leg
pull up on scissor leg
  1. Pull up on the scissor leg (at the point indicated by the light blue arrow) to pop its "nob" out of its hold in the "foot" (simultaneously pushing slightly inward helps).
Pulling one "nob" out of its hold usually pulls the main mechanism completely out of the foot but if not then pull the "nob" on the other side out of its hold to finish the trick.
  2. The scissor "foot" can easily be slide out from underneath the base foot holds (view the pictures above in Replacing Scissor Hinge Mechanisms).
